This 4-day Bird Watching Safari centers around the scenic Lake Naivasha, one of Kenya’s most beautiful freshwater lakes and a top birding hotspot in the Great Rift Valley.
With over 350 recorded bird species, this area offers diverse habitats — open water, papyrus swamps, acacia woodland, and nearby cliffs that attract raptors. You’ll explore Lake Naivasha by boat, visit Hell’s Gate National Park for cliff and savannah birds, and discover the hidden gems of Crater Lake and Lake Oloidien for rare species and tranquil birding walks.

Depart Nairobi after breakfast and drive down the Great Rift Valley escarpment with a brief stop at the Rift Valley Viewpoint for scenic photography. Arrive at Lake Naivasha in time for lunch at your lodge.
Afternoon boat ride on the lake to view hippos and water birds up close. Birds to Spot: African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron, Malachite Kingfisher, Grey-headed Gull, Red-knobbed Coot, and Great Cormorant.

After breakfast, head to Hell’s Gate National Park for a full morning of birding and nature walks among dramatic cliffs, gorges, and open savannah. Hell’s Gate is home to raptors and cliff-dwelling species rarely seen elsewhere in Kenya.
Birds to Spot: Verreaux’s Eagle, Lammergeier (Bearded Vulture), Cliff Chat, Alpine Swift, and Rüppell’s Griffon Vulture. Lunch at a scenic picnic site inside the park.
Afternoon leisure or optional cycling safari in the park for a closer look at birds and wildlife.

Morning drive to Crater Lake Sanctuary, a private reserve west of Lake Naivasha known for peaceful trails and lush acacia forests. Guided birding walk around the lake and forest edge.
Later, visit Lake Oloidien, a small alkaline lake famous for flamingos and migratory waterbirds.
Birds to Spot: Greater and Lesser Flamingos, Little Grebe, Black-tailed Godwit, Hamerkop, and African Jacana.
Return to your lodge for an evening at leisure or a sunset bird photography session along the lakeshore.

Early morning birding walk along the lakeshore to spot last-minute species before breakfast. Look out for sunbirds, weavers, and flycatchers among the acacias. Depart mid-morning for Nairobi, arriving by early afternoon. End of safari.
