ITINERARY

Depart Nairobi early after breakfast, driving through the Great Rift Valley with a brief stop for birding and photography at the viewpoint. Arrive in the Maasai Mara in time for lunch at your lodge or tented camp. Spend the afternoon birding around the acacia woodlands and riverbanks.

Birds To Spot: Lilac-breasted Roller, Superb Starling, Rufous-naped Lark, Crowned Lapwing, and Yellow-throated Longclaw.

Accommodation: Dinner & Overnight: Mara Sopa Lodge / Basecamp Explorer / Zebra Plains Mara Camp.

After breakfast, spend a full day birding and game viewing across the open plains, marshlands, and riverine areas of the Mara. The region’s habitat diversity offers sightings of both resident and migratory birds.

Birds To Spot:

  • Raptors: Martial Eagle, Bateleur, Tawny Eagle, And Secretarybird.
  • Ground Birds: Kori Bustard, Coqui Francolin, And Southern Ground Hornbill.
  • Water Birds: Black-Headed Heron, Saddle-Billed Stork, And African Jacana.
  • Meals: Picnic lunch in the park before continuing with an afternoon birding drive.

    Early morning birding walk (if conditions allow) along the Mara River, where forest-edge and water-associated birds thrive. Spend the day exploring different sections of the park including marshy areas and escarpments.

    Birds to Spot: Schalow’s Turaco, African Finfoot, Giant Kingfisher, Malachite Kingfisher, and Broad-billed Roller. Optional visit to a Maasai village to learn about traditional conservation practices and culture.

    Early morning birding and game drive before breakfast. Look out for early-rising raptors and sunbirds feeding on acacia blooms. Depart after breakfast and enjoy a relaxed drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the afternoon — marking the end of your birding adventure.
