5 DAYS TREKKING MOUNT ELGON OVERVIEW

Mount Elgon (4,321m), straddling the Kenya-Uganda border, is an extinct volcano with vast caves, scenic waterfalls, and rich wildlife. It’s Kenya’s second-highest mountain and offers a less crowded trekking experience compared to Mount Kenya or Kilimanjaro. This 5-day trek via the Chorlim Gate – Koitoboss Peak route is designed for adventurers seeking scenic beauty, wildlife encounters, and moderate hiking challenges.

Best Time: December–March and June–October.

ITINERARY

  • Drive: 2–3 hours from Kitale to Chorlim Gate.
  • Register with KWS rangers at the gate. Begin a short warm-up trek from Chorlim Gate (2,200m) to Kapkuro Camp (2,800m). Explore nearby Kitum Cave, known for elephants that dig salt from the cave walls.
  • Wildlife: Forest monkeys, buffaloes, colobus monkeys, and elephants.
  • Overnight: Kapkuro Camp (2,800m).
  • Meals: Lunch & Dinner.
  • Trekking Time: 5–6 hours.

  • Hike through lush montane forest filled with giant ferns, bamboo, and birdlife. Gradual ascent with scenic views of valleys and waterfalls. Picnic lunch en route.
  • Overnight: Chepnyali Camp.
  • Meals (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner).
  • Trekking Time: 5–6 Hours.

  • Vegetation transitions to moorland and heather zones. Encounter giant lobelias and everlasting flowers unique to high-altitude regions. Arrive at Roadhead Camp, base for summit day.
  • Overnight: Road Head Camp.
  • Meals: Breakfast,Lunch & Dinner.
  • Early Start: 5:00 AM | Trekking Time: 6–8 hours round trip.

  • Summit Koitoboss Peak, the highest point on the Kenyan side. Enjoy panoramic views of the Elgon caldera, Uganda plains, and surrounding peaks. Descend back to Roadhead for hot lunch, then continue to Kapkuro Camp (optional overnight).
  • Overnight: Roadhead Camp or Kapkuro Camp.
  • Meals: Breakfast,Lunch & Dinner.
  • Trekking Time: 3–4 hours.

  • Descend through scenic bamboo forest and farmland. Arrive at Chorlim Gate, receive trekking certificate. Transfer back to Kitale town for lunch and end of trek.
