MOUNT KENYA CHOGORIA - NAROMORU ROUTE OVERVIEW

The 5-day Mount Kenya trek via Chogoria–Naromoru route is one of the most scenic and rewarding trekking experiences in Africa. This route combination offers trekkers the best of both worlds — the breathtaking beauty of the Chogoria route with its glacial lakes, waterfalls, and panoramic valleys, followed by a quick descent down the Naromoru route, famous for the thrilling “Vertical Bog.”

The adventure begins with a scenic drive through the lush central highlands to the Chogoria Gate, where the climb starts. Over the next few days, the trail winds through dense montane forests, bamboo zones, and moorland landscapes dotted with giant lobelias and groundsels. As you ascend, you’ll pass the enchanting Lake Ellis and Lake Michaelson, both nestled below the towering peaks — a perfect setting for stunning photography.

Your summit attempt begins before dawn from Austrian Hut (or Point Lenana Base Camp), where you’ll make your final push to Point Lenana (4,985m) — the third highest peak on Mount Kenya. From the summit, enjoy an unforgettable sunrise over the African plains, with views stretching as far as Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day.

The descent follows the Naromoru route, offering a fast and direct path down through the “Vertical Bog” and the bamboo forest to the park gate. This route is ideal for trekkers seeking a scenic ascent and a faster, more direct descent.

Ideal for: Adventurous hikers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts seeking a moderate challenge with spectacular scenery and less crowded trails.

WHY CHOOSE CHOGORIA NAROMORU ROUTE

  • Chogoria Route (Ascent) – Known as the most scenic route on Mount Kenya, it passes through lush forests, beautiful waterfalls, and the breathtaking Gorges Valley. You’ll see Lake Ellis, Lake Michaelson, and The Temple, offering some of the best photography opportunities on the mountain.
  • Naromoru Route (Descent) – It’s the fastest and most direct descent route, taking you down efficiently after the summit. It also allows for easier access to transport and accommodation near Naromoru town.
  • The Chogoria side is often called the “Garden of Mount Kenya.” It’s less crowded, greener, and offers dramatic landscapes — from bamboo forests to moorlands filled with giant lobelias and groundsels.
  • Ascending through Chogoria provides a gradual altitude gain, helping trekkers acclimatize better compared to the steeper Naromoru ascent. This reduces the risk of altitude sickness and improves summit success rates.
  • By combining both routes, you get a loop trek that avoids backtracking — every day brings a new view and terrain. You’ll experience: Waterfalls and lakes on Chogoria,Alpine moorlands and rocky trails near Point Lenana,The famous “Vertical Bog” on the Naromoru side
  • Descending via Naromoru offers a smoother exit — roads are in better condition and closer to Nanyuki, making travel to Nairobi or nearby towns easier.
