MOUNT KILIMANJARO UMBWE ROUTE OVERVIEW

The Umbwe Route is the shortest and steepest route up Mount Kilimanjaro. It is often described as the most challenging trail, suitable only for experienced trekkers or those seeking a true mountain adventure.

Starting on the southern side of the mountain, the Umbwe Route climbs sharply through the dense rainforest, joining the Machame Route at Barranco Camp before continuing to the summit via Barafu Camp.

Although physically demanding, it rewards climbers with spectacular views, dramatic ridges, and a true sense of accomplishment.

Best Time: January–March And June–October.

ITINERARY

Distance: 11 Km | Hiking Time: 5–7 Hours | Habitat: Rainforest.

  • After breakfast and a drive to Umbwe Gate, meet your guides and crew for registration. The trek begins steeply through dense rainforest on narrow ridges with roots and moss-covered rocks. The climb is intense but scenic, with opportunities to spot monkeys and tropical birds. Arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp for dinner and overnight.
  • Overnight: Umbwe Cave Camp.
  • Meals: Lunch & Dinner.
  • Distance: 6 Km | Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours | Habitat: Heath And Moorland.

  • The trail continues to steepen as you leave the forest and enter the moorland zone. You’ll follow a narrow ridge with stunning views of deep valleys and towering cliffs.
  • Eventually, the trail flattens as it approaches Barranco Camp, where you’ll join the Machame Route.
  • Overnight: Barranco Camp.
  • Meals: Breakfast,Lunch & Dinner.
  • Distance: 6 Km | Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert.

  • Start the morning by tackling the Barranco Wall, a thrilling but non-technical climb. From the top, enjoy spectacular views of Heim Glacier and Kibo Peak. The trail then descends into valleys and crosses ridges to reach Karanga Camp.
  • Overnight: Karanga Camp.
  • Meals: Breakfast,Lunch & Dinner.
  • Distance: 4 Km | Hiking Time: 3–4 Hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert.

  • Continue ascending through the dry alpine desert zone toward Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit push. The trail is short but steep. Upon arrival, have an early dinner and rest before the midnight summit attempt.
  • Overnight: Barafu Camp.
  • Meals: Breakfast,Lunch & Dinner.
  • Distance: 17 Km | Hiking Time: 10–14 Hours | Habitat: Arctic Zone To Moorland.

  • Wake up around midnight for your summit attempt. Begin the steep ascent to Stella Point (5,685m) on the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime sunrise, take photos, and celebrate your achievement. Descend via Barafu to Mweka Camp, where you’ll have a hot meal and a well-deserved rest.

  • Descend through lush rainforest trails to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. Meet your driver and transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower and celebration.
